Inscribed in ink on facing page: There is no evidence of the existence of a Castle, or any military building at Trim, anterior to the date of the English invasion ... Henry II bestowed for the service of 50 knights the fertile territory of Meath upon the celebrated Hugh de Lacy, who fixed on Trim as his residence and built there about the year 1173, a strong castle surrounded by a moat ... The present Castle ... is generally believed to have been re-erected by Richard Peppard or Pepard. It occupies within its walls about two acres of ground, and stands on a sloping mound on the right bank of the Boyne. The great keep or donjon in the centre is a rectangular building, with massive square towers abutting from each side, and rising to a height of nearly eighty feet ... image 10 x 25.7 cm.
