Drawn by Austin Cooper perhaps when he was touring the country gathering money from area tax collectors, or a Paymaster to the Civil and Military Establishments. In his diary for May 26th, 1781 (NLI Ms. Acc. Munster 4841, page 15 and quoted in Liam Price's book, page 18), Cooper wrote of Adare: Adair, is a small town consisting of a few Cabbins [sic]; a small river called the Maige passes thro' it, over which is a plain bridge. On the N. side, close by the river, are the ruins of a very large & strong Castle, said to be Desmond's
