Drawn by Austin Cooper perhaps when he was touring the country gathering money from area tax collectors, or a Paymaster to the Civil and Military Establishments. Cooper visited this castle on May 15th, 1781, as part of a journey to Munster, and in his diary (now NLI Ms Acc. Munster 1781, page 5 and published also in Liam Price's book, page 13) he wrote: 'The Castle of Moret - Queen's Coy. - is 36 ft 6 ins. by 49 ft. It does not seem to be very ancient, as the work is quite fresh & altogether it has a modern Appearance. The inside is quite black, as if it had been burned & without any Stairs. From some little Banks & c remaining I imagine it to have been surrounded by a Fosse &c. The wall is 4 ft 8 ins. It is said to have been built by the Fitzgerald's'
