| Summary: | Elizabeth Rivers was born in England in 1903 and studied art, especially wood engraving, at Goldsmith's College, London. She illustrated with woodcuts many books such as Walter de la Mare's "On the Edge". She went to Paris to study art under Andre Lhote and Gino Severini. In 1935 she went to visit the Aran Islands and ended up staying there for seven years. She executed woodcuts and paintings capturing the way of life in the West of Ireland. During the war she returned to London for wartime services. In 1946 she returned to the Aran Islands and being a friend of Ethel Mannin, she illustrated Mannin's book "Connemara Journal" in 1947. Other books she has illustrated include: Sean's O'Faolain "The Man Who Invented Sin and Other Stories", New York 1948; "Initium Sancti Evangelii secundum Johannem", Dublin 1953; Lady Clara Vyvyan's "On Timeless Shores", London 1957; Richard Jefferies "Amaryllis at the Fair". She also had a sequence of her wood engravings published in a book "This Man", London 1939.
