C.W. Cole spent time in Ballinrobe, County Mayo. He was working as a special artist for The Graphic, reporting on the events relating to the Irish Land League in the west of Ireland in 1880. This image depicts the huge military presence on the streets of Ballinrobe outside the Valkenberg's Hotel. On the wall of the hotel is a sign saying "Valkenberg's Posting Establishment" |

Image published in slightly altered form as a wood engraving entitled '2. "War :" Market Day at Ballinrobe during the Military Occupation' as part of a series of illustrations on page 585, under the title "The Land Agitation in Ireland - Sketches from Ballinrobe and Lough Mask" (accompanied by an article "The Condition of Ireland" on page 579), in the Graphic, December 11th 1880. This engraving was done in contrast to the engraving '"Peace :" A sketch at Ballinrobe after the departure of the troops' on page 584 of the Graphic, December 11th 1880 (from the sketch 2196 (TX) 62)
