He was working as a special artist for The Graphic reporting on the events relating to the Irish Land League in the west of Ireland. At Ballinrobe he covered the so-called Boycott Relief Expedition (12th - 26th November 1880) in which the army escorted the 50 "Orange Labourers", employed to save Captain Boycott's crops, to and from their camp at Lough Mask.
