Summary:C.W. Cole accompanied HRH the Duke of Edinburgh on his "Relief of Irish Distress" Tour of the West and South coast of Ireland in 1880. This image shows members of the relief party inside one of the delapidated cottages on Gorumna Island. A volunteer guide holds a sick woman in his arms while a surgeon hands her a drink. The occupants of the cottage huddle around the fire and the islanders peek in through the door. Another surgeon writes notes on a stool by the door and a baby lies in a cradle beside him.
