Tullow Street, Carlow, Co. Carlow on a fine day with not too much happening. Dominated by a large religious institution on the right and with a T-junction in the distance this must have been a quiet street outside of school time? (By the way, well done to all on the information gleaned on the two Walker shots earlier this week! Even though his slides are relatively recent, so much has changed in the interim - making them truly invaluable now!)
While the streetscape here has changed significantly since, unlike the Walker shots, the main subject does survive. And that subject, the Carlow Convent National School, are the main thing that help us date this image. Specifically, we know that we are after 1899 (date on gable plaque) and before 1906 (the date of a postcard version of this image)....

The first provincial town in Ireland to have public lighting was Carlow. The system, though simple, was advanced for its time- a generating plant on the Barrow in the flour mill owned by Major Alexander in the village of Milford, four miles from Carlow. The Carlow system, commissioned in 1889, was opened in 1891 on a night when Charles Stewart Parnell, was addressing a meeting there. (from the ESB archives)

The Carlow County Museum, County Library and Archives are now housed in the old Convent, country cousins maybe.

I like the little roller in the foreground. I actually thought it was one of those line-makers when I saw it first, as we used to have an old one here and it looks almost identical.

No help in dating, I'm afraid, but the big 'K' sign on A Smyth's shop door caught my attention. Given that Smyth's was a shoe shop (per the census), it seems that the K must refer to K Shoes. In 1865 what turned out to be possibly the most momentous decision ever for the company was unconsciously taken. Someone picked up a leather punch which happened to have a “K” on it, and started marking all the soles issued to the outworkers. With forethought it would almost certainly in those times have been an “S”, but fortunately “K” it was. This very quickly became associated with Kendal, and soon customers were asking specifically for the shoes marked with a “K”. When the first Trade Marks Act came into force in 1875, the Partners immediately applied for its registration. The regulations of the Act forbade registration of single letters unless prior use for 10 years could be proved. This Somervell Brothers were able to do, and as a result the “K” trademark is believed to be the only single letter registration allowed to remain in the British Trade Marks Register. The firm was taken over by Clarke's who still market footwear described as 'K by Clarke's'.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/bernardhealy] notes grass growing on a chimney - but I am not sure the convent and the nearer National School building are from the same date. Here is a colourized postcard which from the fashions is early 20th century, and shows shrubs growing behind the railings. (Loads of windows open again, which suggests this was normal enough).

In streetview, I see a memorial plaque between the windows to the right of the door of the convent, but I can't read it.

OK, was misreading various things - this is not the Convent of the Assumption as I was thinking, this is Presentation Convent, and definitely older then the 1899-1901 national school. Here is a page about it, the main (further) building is from 1877. There is a postcard version of this image there dated postmarked 1906, so we are before that date.
