This photo was taken in the late 19th century, probably by Robert French, chief photographer of William Lawrence Photographic Studios of Dublin.
You can compare this view with its companion photo next door taken approximately 100 years later as part of the Lawrence Photographic Project 1990/1991, where one thousand photographs from the Lawrence Collection in the National Library of Ireland were replicated a hundred years later by a team of volunteer photographers, thereby creating a record of the changing face of the selected locations all over Ireland.
For further information on the Lawrence Photographic Project, read all about it on our NLI Blog.
Our thanks to beachcomberaustralia for an image of Waterfoot produced using Google Earth.
Date: Circa 1890

It is great to compare 'Then', 'then', and 'now'. Google Maps Street View is too low down - g.co/maps/tn6wr . The Google Earth plugin produced this - @beachcomberaustralia/7127624061/

@beachcomberaustralia Absolutely too low down. I think we may well need to encourage Google to do Hill View for some of the Lawrence Photographic Project images that we'll be uploading over the next 31 weeks. We're going alphabetically, so today's was A is for Antrim.

Niall McAuley
Just admiring this in megazoom, and I see that the building beyond the bridge on the left is called James McAuley (no relation) and looks to have a Post Office sign over the door. James is 55 in the 1901 census. His wife and assistant, Catherine, is 48. In 1911, the whole town is as Gaeilge.
