Summary:Satirical etching by William Brocas [after an original 1801 hand coloured etching by James Gillray, published by Hannah Humphrey; see British Museum Satires 9764] of eight elderly men, seated around a table drinking and smoking (on the table is a punch-bowl, wine-glasses and tobacco); one man stands while singing; a portrait of Anacreon hangs on the wall. A bracket-clock hanging on the wall points to 3.40 - on it is carved a Bacchanalian figure of Time astride a cask. Printed on sheet above image is: "Whilst snug in our club-room we jovially twine - the myrtle of Wenus with Bacchus's wine". This is from the constitutional song of the Anacreontic Society, which was a gentlemen's club of amateur musicians in London founded in the mid-18th century by professional men [the then Prince of Wales was also a member] who named their club after the Greek court poet Anacreon, whose poems, "anacreontics", were used to entertain patrons. The society was known for their interest in music and presented concerts of music and suppers.
