James Valentine was a Scottish engraver and stationer who added photography to his business during the 1850's and 1860's. His son, William Dobson Valentine, later expanded the business and in 1898 began producing images for the postcard trade. Valentine & Sons' period of greatest photographic postcard activity was between 1929 and the 1950's. Staff photographers took most of the images, though some were purchased or commissioned from other photographers, including Duffner Brothers of Dundalk.
