There were six artists in this Dublin based family: James Brocas (ca. 1754-1780) and his brother Henry Brocas Senior (ca. 1762-1837) who had four sons, James Henry Brocas Junior (ca. 1790-1846), Samuel Frederick Brocas (ca. 1792-1847), William Brocas, RHA (ca. 1794-1868) and Henry Brocas Junior (ca. 1798-1873). Henry Brocas Senior was Master of the Dublin Society's School of Landscape and Ornament from 14 August, 1800 to 4 May, 1837. He was succeeded by his fourth son, Henry, on 26th April, 1838 who was master until October, 1854.

Originally collected by Dr. Jasper Robert Joly (1819-1892) and donated with other material to the Royal Dublin Society in 1863. The Joly Collection which included the Brocas Collection was among material transferred to the National Library of Ireland following its establishment in 1877.
