[Laurence O'Neill' (1864–1943), Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1917-1924]. This sheet has a very lengthy nationalist poem in support of Irish independence printed on it - an extract towards the end reads: "Give us our rank - for which our fathers died - / A Nation 'midst the nations of the earth. / We are sick playing England's dearest slave. We are England's equal by the right of birth. / Though seven hundred years of tyranny / Have all but blotted freedom from our brows / The memory of our past is in our hearts, / The dream of future greatness in our souls...". |
