Regarding LO 14671, the author of this very scarce collection of literary essays was William Kirkpatrick Magee (1868-1961), who wrote under the pen name John Eglinton. He was head librarian of the National Library of Ireland, and a vocal opponent of the "cultural nationalism" of the Celtic Revival, like Joyce a supporter of a more European intellectual focus. He was an early admirer of Joyce's writing, published a poem by Joyce in the magazine Dana which he edited, and appears more than once in Ulysses, both in the "Scylla and Charibdis" and "Circe" chapters. Joyce once attempted to have Pebbles from a Brook translated into Italian, and while composing Finnegans Wake he wrote to Eglinton, "...did I give you a little edition of Anna Livia Plurabelle...If I did so, will you please give me in exchange a signed copy of Pebbles from a Brook." The key significance of the river images to Joyce's final work makes this solicited gift of Pebbles from a Brook particularly compelling. Books from Joyce's library are rare, as the bulk of the private library that he had in Paris was later donated en masse to the University of Buffalo Library. The chemise has the bookplate of Alexander Neubauer, who had one of the best James Joyce collections in private hands.
