O'Hara Tontine,

1790-1884.

A tontine is a financial arrangement under which subscribers to a loan receive annual annuities, which increase as the other subscribers to the loan die. Ultimately, in theory, the final surviving subscriber should receive the entire sum of the annuities. The O’Haras instituted their tontine in response to their persistent financial problems throughout the eighteenth century. This section contains accounts and correspondence relating to the O’Hara tontine dating from 1790 to 1884.
