Five original watercolours, painted on Whatman Board, all signed with the artists' initials (and some dated), each an illustration for a volume entitled “Ninety-Eight,” relating to the Irish Rebellion of 1798, by John Hill, published in London by Downey & Co. for the 1798 centenary in 1898. [A 1897 edition of 'Ninety-Eight' by Cormac Cahir O'Connor Faly, illustrated by A.D. McCormick that was acquired with these drawings has been transferred to NLI Published Collections Department].

Arthur David McCormick, R.F.G.S., (1860-1943) was from Coleraine, Co. Antrim. An expedition artist, having travelled as official recorder on three trips to the Far East, he also carried out various commissions as a book illustrator. His most famous commission was “The Head of a Sailor” for John Player Cigarettes.

Description:An original watercolour, featuring the characters Denis and Cormac (one with a sword, the other with a pike) participating in a street battle in New Ross, Co. Wexford, against members of the Yeomanry on horseback. Painted on Whatman Board, dated and signed with the artists' initials bottom left and pencil annotations on verso of the board concerning the dimensions of the image [probably instructions to a printer]. This was one of the original illustrations for a volume entitled “Ninety-Eight,” relating to the Irish Rebellion of 1798, by John Hill, published in London by Downey & Co. for the 1798 centenary in 1898.
