A room is depicted where in the left background a woman plays the piano; she turns, engaging one of the men who is dancing in conversation. At the centre of the room a besotted couple stand with their backs to the chimney piece, staring into one another's eyes, while opposite a man who is short in stature reaches up to take the hand of a lady either side of him, as they dance. Another man, who is leaning against the chimney piece appears to be ogling a woman opposite. Fashionable dress is burlesqued, with the women wearing very décolletée, short-waisted dresses while men wear extremely high collars and knee-breeches or loose or very tight pantaloons. Hanging on the wall, either side of the chimney piece are two framed images - the image hanging at left depicts an elegant man and a female dancer, both of whom wear large feathered headpieces, both en pointe while the image hanging on the wall at right depicts a portly man, who holds a clay pipe in his right hand while dancing with a woman; in the left background of the scene a musician plays a wind instrument.
