Description:After James Gillray's 'Progress of the Toilet.-The Stays.-Plate 1', published 26 February 1810 by Hannah Humphrey, 27 St James's Street, London; see BM Satires 11608. Lettered with title underneath image, "Lady's Toilette. Stays & Trowsers.” with publication line underneath: "Publish'd by J. Le Petit, 20 Capel St., Dublin” and lower left, cropped and just seen "[Pla]te 1". Social satire featuring the depiction of a young lady who stands in profile (in front of a dressing table draped in muslin), facing her reflection in a swing-mirror placed on it. She wears a boudoir cap (tied under the chin) that has a pink ribbon on it, blue slippers, white clocked stockings, white knickerbockers, a white undergarment and her maid stands behind her, engaged in lacing her up in a pair of long stays. The young lady holds a flat ruler-shaped stick under the stays in front to regulate the operation. Several brushes, containers and bottles are placed on the dressing-table - the labels of the bottles are visible - one has a label that reads ‘Milk of Roses', beside this is a bottle labelled 'Esprit de Lavande'. Adjacent to this are rosary beads, a mask with a ticket just visible underneath (that is inscribed 'Masquerade [Portland Mounts?]') and there is a pin cushion in front of the swing-mirror. A small brown and white toy dog looks at its’ own reflection in the mirror. Heavy fringed curtains cover the window. In the left background on the wall is a small hanging book-case with curtained glass doors; several small volumes of books are visible. A framed picture of a woman walking, wearing a red coloured cloak and bonnet hangs in the right background. Underneath this is a console table with a Chinese vase with a bouquet of pink flowers in it. In the left foreground on the patterned carpet beside a chair is a basin, large earthenware jug and a pewter tankard on which small boxes for toilet appliances are placed on top of white linen.
