Influenced by Thomas Rowlandson's print [after George Moutard Woodward] 'Accommodation. Or lodgings to let at Portsmouth!!', published on 20 June 1808 by Thomas Tegg, 111 Cheapside, London. See BM Satires 11139. This print lettered with title "Accommodation or Lodgings to let at Portsmouth!!" and lacking publication line. A sailor, wearing striped pantaloons and a blue jacket is depicted arm-in-arm with a fashionably dressed woman, who holds a green parasol and wears many gold chains; a miniature hangs from one while a watch and seals hang from the other. The couple stand in front of the door of a corner-house abutting on a quay. Above the door is a notice that reads: 'Lodgings for Single Men and Their Wives' while written on the door is an inscription with a pointing hand: 'Please to ring the Bell'. The sailor remarks (in a speech bubble): "Why Nan—this is the very birth, we have been so long looking for". In the right background a sailor and a woman embrace while the masts and rigging of ships can be seen beyond them.
