Description:Lettered with title 'The Battier Rabbit sent to Coventry!!'. Lacking publication line. This caricature depicts soldiers from the cavalry regiment the Tenth Royal Hussars seated in a well appointed room around a long table, on which there is lots of food, glass decanters filled with wine and several full wine glasses. Four liveried servants tend to the soldiers. One soldier in the foreground, holds a carving knife in his right hand, while with his left he has a small rabbit speared on his fork that he holds out to a liveried servant who holds a silver plate. he says (in a speech bubble) "The--eh--Tenth--eh, never Carve for Merchant's Son!". On the carpeted floor is a sheet of paper that reads: "Appointment to Ball...York". A small dog urinates on the sheet. Seated opposite him, another officer looking riled, says "Hell, - & Damnation" while the officer seated alongside, toasts his glass, remarking: "The 10th with 10 times 10".The officer seated at far end of the table says "Bravo, 10th!". The liveried servant in the left background remarks: "the powers but he has helped himself hugely!!". [This caricature refers to William Battier, a cornet (the third and lowest grade of commissioned officer in a British cavalry troop, after captain and lieutenant) in the 10th Royal Hussars regiment who was insulted in the officers' mess of the 10th Royal Hussars; he was subsequently involved in a bloodless duel with Charles William Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854) in Battersea, 12 May 1824].
