Letters to Richard Talbot, Earl of Tyrconnel, and other documents,

1672-1690.

In addition to letters addressed to Richard Talbot from various people there are lists of army officers, news-letters, military orders, an order from James when he was Duke of York, a printed ballad entitled 'Battle of the Boyne', and a second version of the ballad in manuscript (probably from the 19th century). Amongst Tyrconnel's correspondents are: the Earl of Limerick, Sir Daniel Arthur, Count Rosen, Lord Melfort, the Comte d'Avaux, the Duc de Lauzun, Lord Dunbarton, the Marquis de Roncherolles, Dominic Sheldon, Colonel James Porter, the Duc d'Aumont, Lord Dongan, the Earl of Dunfermline, Brigadier Canan, Thomas Buchan and the Earl of Dover. There is an unsigned letter from Tyrconnel's wife, Frances and a draft of a letter from Tyrconnel to Paul Barillon, the Marquis de Branges.

Notes:The volume contains 47 original documents, each one accompanied by a modern transcription. Some of the letters (mainly those written by the French and other continentals) contain dual dating, since France and other Catholic states in Europe adopted the new Gregorian calendar in 1582, but Britain (including Ireland) retained the Julian calendar until 1750. The difference of ten days is noted by writing both dates.

The documents and letters, which belonged to Richard Talbot, Earl of Tyrconnell, were captured at the Battle of the Boyne, and preserved by Sir Robert Southwell, Chief Secretary for Ireland.
