Notes:Maurice Stewart Collis was born in Dublin in 1889 into a family that had included several distinguished medical men. His father was a lawyer and the family lived in Donnybrook, Dublin. Maurice Collis was educated at Rugby and Oxford but returned to Ireland for his holidays, and, through his mother, was deeply influenced by the Literary Revival in Dublin and developed lifelong Irish nationalist opinions. In 1911, perhaps due to the influence of his uncle Sir George Grierson, the Orientalist, he joined the Indian Civil Service. He was posted to Burma, where he served for 25 years and rose to become District Magistrate of Rangoon by 1928. His Irish nationalism led him at an early date to a strong sympathy with Burmese nationalism but his position required that he kept his opinions relatively private. In 1930 when as District Magistrate he gave judgement in favour of the Burmese viewpoint in a series of criminal trials. This caused offence in government circles and this led him to retire from the civil service in 1934 and return to England to pursue a literary career. In 1957 at the age of 68 he took up painting and held a one-man exhibition in London. He became an art critic and a founder member of the International Association of Art Critics. He contributed art criticism to journals and newspapers and wrote books on his friends L. S. Lowry and Stanley Spencer. He was a brother-in-law of Joseph Hone and a close friend of Jack Yeats. He died in London in 1973.
