Alexander McCabe Papers.

Contains the personal and official correspondence of Fr Alexander McCabe, who served as Vice-Rector and then Rector of the Royal College of the Irish Nobles in Salamanca during the 1930s and 1940s. A large part of the collection is comprised of diaries which chronicle Fr McCabe's experience during the Spanish Civil war and in General Francisco Franco's Spain during World War 2 and its aftermath. This encompasses the two-year period in which the Irish College was occupied by a Nazi press and propaganda agency, attached to the German embassy. Fr McCabe's diaries also recount his experiences in Ireland and detail his experiences while travelling. The McCabe papers also include a diverse and illuminating correspondence, a series of photographs, notebooks, administrative and legal papers from his time as Rector of the Irish College, and family papers. Ecclesiastical correspondents include J.J. Glennon, Archbishop of Dublin, R.J. Fitzgerald, Archbishop of Gibraltar, David L. Greenstock, Rector of the English College at Valladolid, Fr John O'Hara, and Fr John Mulrean. Political correspondents include the Falangists, Gonzalo de Aguilera y Munro, Conde de Alba y Yeltes, and Pablo Merry de Val, as well as the monarchist, José María de Hoyos y Vinent de la Torre O'Neill, marqués de Hoyos, and various members of the German embassy. The collection also includes some of the McCabe family's papers, including the papers of McCabe's father, James, and correspondence from Fr McCabe's mother, Kate, and his sisters.
