Royal Irish Fusiliers Soldiers' Letters,

1899-1907.

Letters from soliders attached to the Royal Irish Fusiliers, written from South Africa, the Punjab and Ireland and sent to family and friends during the years 1899 to 1907. Included are letters from Private Edward Byrne of the 2nd Battalion and Corp. Michael Byrne, of B Company, which relate for the most part to their experiences in South Africa during the course of the Boer War (1899-1902) and their subsequent transfer to various British Army stations in the Punjab. Also included are letters to Byrne from Major Rowland Brinckman, formerly of the R.I.F., concerning his efforts to secure Nolan work on his leaving the British Army, newscuttings, miscellaneous ephmeral items relating to the Boer War and India and a typescript copy of an essay titled 'Edward Nolan's Boer War'.

Description:Letters from Private Edward Nolan of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers to his parents and sister Annie, written from Colenso, Wonderfontein, Sterkfontein, Natal and Standerton, South Africa. Nolan refers to his depature from Colchester for South Africa in October 1899, casualties at the Battle of Colenso (27 Dec. 1899), the ground the battalion cover in marches, the difficulties the Boers have in replacing their death and injured (4 Jan. 1900), rumours of the Boers making a stand at Lydenburg (9 Aug. 1900), his being wounded from shell fire [1900], dystenary and fever among British soldiers, sending money home and his being transferred to India (Sept. 1902). Some letters are incomplete and have been annotated in a second hand.
