Dease family papers,

1800-1900.

A small collection of papers relating to the Dease family, which consists primarily of letters to Edmund Gerald Dease M.P., of Rath House, Ballybrittas, Co. Laois. Among those writing to Dease, for the most part on political matters, are Lady Betty Balfour, William Gladstone and Aubrey de Vere. Also included are letters to members of the Grattan family (Edmund Dease was married to Mary Grattan, daughter of Henry Grattan M.P.) and some fragmentary papers relating to members of the Dease family from early 19th century, notably a 19th century copy 1648 will of Thomas Dease, Bishop of Meath.

Description:Grattan writes largely on personal matters, notably his receipt of an inheritance and their mutual connections and friends. He also refers in passing to 'our Catholic question', which he says 'went off better than I expected - it certainly has not lost ground'. The letter is dated 29 May 1800.
