Dease family papers,

1800-1900.

A small collection of papers relating to the Dease family, which consists primarily of letters to Edmund Gerald Dease M.P., of Rath House, Ballybrittas, Co. Laois. Among those writing to Dease, for the most part on political matters, are Lady Betty Balfour, William Gladstone and Aubrey de Vere. Also included are letters to members of the Grattan family (Edmund Dease was married to Mary Grattan, daughter of Henry Grattan M.P.) and some fragmentary papers relating to members of the Dease family from early 19th century, notably a 19th century copy 1648 will of Thomas Dease, Bishop of Meath.

Laois, dated 12 June 1890, concerns the land question in Ireland, the work of the National League and their views on the landlord Lord Fitzwilliam; his letter dated 15 September 1896 refers to the Church of Ireland, its disetablishment and his own opinion on the Catholic Church's claims to the 'ruined Cathedral at [Cashel]'.
