De Freyne Papers.

This collection comprises estate, personal and political papers for the French family, Barons De Freyne of Coolavin, Co. Sligo. The estate papers deal principally with the French family’s lands in Sligo, Roscommon and Mayo. A large body of the estate papers concern the French family’s acquisition of lands from the O’Connor Sligo in the seventeenth century, as well as their navigation of the Cromwellian and Restoration settlements. The management of the estate by Arthur French, 4th Baron De Freyne (1855-1913), in a period dominated by the ‘long’ Land War (1879-1909), forms another significant part of the collection. Among the French family’s personal papers are letters from Arthur Reginald French, 5th Baron De Freyne (1879 - 1915), to his father, describing his experiences as a private in the US Army and material relating to his ill-received marriage to Anabelle Angus, a divorcée and daughter of a Scottish coachman and innkeeper. Notably, the collection also includes two letters from Daniel O’Connell (1775-1847) to Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832).
