IV.i.1. Letters from Lieut. Richard Wolfe, written from Egypt and the Sudan, to his siblings George and Elizabeth Wolfe,

1884-1885.

Writing to his brother George from Aswan, Egypt, Lieut. Wolfe refers to his arrival in Aswan from Cairo with his regiment, deaths among the soldiers from fever, an officer’s camel race and his visiting local antiquities. (2-7 Nov 1884). Writing from Ambukol, Sudan, he refers to his having undertaken a 390 mile march with his regiment and his having made a will ‘in case of death’ (4 Jan 1885). An attached envelope is addressed to his brother George, in Bengal, were he was serving with the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

Notes:Lieut. Richard Wolfe was the eldest son of Theobald George Samuel Wolfe of Forenaughts and Bishopsland, Co. Kildare, and Elizabeth Henrietta Wolfe (née Ball), of Tipperkevin, Co. Kildare. He joined the British Army, serving in the 2nd Dragoons and Royal Scots Greys, and was killed in action at the Battle of Abu Klea, in Sudan in January 1885.
