Description:Papers relating to Niall Montgomery's father James Montgomery, the first film censor of the Irish Free State. Includes material on his memoirs "A Boy’s Life on the Dublin Quays", some of his scholarly works such as a piece entitled "The Menace of Hollywood" , as well handwritten notes and drawings. The papers contain a large amount of James Montgomery’s correspondence, ca 1912-1942, including letters with Oliver St John Gogarty, Liam Burke, Arthur Griffith, Grace Gifford Plunkett, Brian O’Nolan, among many others. Many of letters to and from James Montgomery are related to his duty as film censor of the Irish Free State. Also included is material relating to the death and funeral of James Montgomery, including several newspaper clippings announcing his passing and reporting on his life and funeral as well as many notes and letters of condolences addressed to Ruth and Niall Montgomery.
