Pádraic Fleming was born in 1894. Fleming joined the Laois Volunteers in 1913 with his elder brother Eamon and came into contact with Terence McSweeney, Thomas McCurtain and Thomas Kent in Cork. During the 1916 Rising, Padraig Pearse tasked Fleming and the Laois Volunteers with wrecking the rail lines at Clonard, Portlaoise and Ardreigh. Following the rising, Pádraic and Eamon went on the run and Pádraic spent much of his time in Cork. During his visits home he continued to recruit Volunteers for the North Kilkenny Brigade of which he was a Commanding Officer. He was arrested and brought to cork in 1917 and was charged with attempting to buy arms and was sentenced to five years penal servitude. He ended up in Maryborough (now Portlaoise) prison and demanded political status but was not granted this. He protested by writing to Dublin Castle and refusing food, as a result of this he became ill and was released under licence. He became involved in the North Kilkenny brigade in 1918 but was re-arrested and imprisoned in Portlaoise in June. Fleming refused to co-operate with authorities and became very ill, his sentence was reduced and he was moved to Mountjoy jail in 1919 and achieved political status. In 1920 he escaped while in Mountjoy, assisted by Michael Collins, Harry Boland and Rory O’Connor. Fleming published his book ‘In Maryboro and Mountjoy’, which recounted his time in prison. Due to fears of re-capture, Collins had Fleming sent to America to tell his story and he made his way to New York, his book was distributed throughout the USA by Friends of Irish Freedom and the American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic. After the signing of the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty, Fleming returned to Ireland by request of Liam Mellows. He took charge of the south Eastern Division of the IRA in Wexford. He was eventually captured in Enniscorthy, was imprisoned and escaped numerous times. He was released when the Civil War ended. In 1925 he married Rita Farrelly, a veteran of the War of Independence. He died in 1952 in Castlecomer, County Kilkenny.
