McCartan reports that De Valera said during his meeting with Hanna that "there would be no more fighting". He discusses how Devoy suggests "getting a Protestant leader from the North" to solve the boundary issues. He also writes, "So the canny Quaker is about to call on you. He can straddle the fence very successfully and retires from the Senate when there is an embarrassing division".
