Letter from Oliver Wendell Holmes to Alice Stopford Green regarding coercion of Ulster,

1914 July 5.

In this letter, Holmes states that "The English, when benevolent, made the mistake of wanting the Irish to be happy in their way. Why should the Irish require a different breed to be happy in theirs." He asks Alice, who loves independence why she would "want to put the screws onto Ulster if its population is not in accord with the rest of the island?"
