Letter from Roger Casement to Richard Morten, discussing the poetry of Omar Khayyam and Edward FitzGerald, and his thoughts on the ongoing Boer War,

1901 March 15.

Casement admits that he cannot see the appeal of Omar Khayyam, includes a "Rubaiyat, or Tetrastich" poem of his own, complains tongue-in-cheek that Edward FitzGerald 'stole' an idea of his 50 years before him, and complains about the dishonesty of the Boers which has prolonged the war in South Africa and that the British should have "cleared the country of every male inhabitant...Had we done that - "loyals as well as disloyals, - the war would have been over, I think, six months ago".
