George Gavan Duffy was born 21 October 1882 at Rose Cottage, Rock Ferry, Cheshire and was the son of Nationalist politician Sir Charles Gavan Duffy. Gavan Duffy qualified as a solicitor in London in 1907 and acted as solicitor for Roger Casement during his trial for treason in 1916. After this, he moved to Ireland and became immersed in Irish political life and was elected for Sinn Féin for Dublin County South in the 1918 general election. Following this, he acted as an envoy for the republic. While he was the Dáil representative in Paris he published articles and pamphlets relating to the Irish situation and he went on to promote the Irish cause throughout Europe. Gavan Duffy was appointed by Éamon de Valera to act as one of the Irish plenipotentiaries to negotiate with the British government. Duffy did not agree with signing the treaty but did so reluctantly and was the last representative to sign. He reluctantly recommended the Treaty during Dáil debates as he saw no alternative for the aim of Irish independence. He was appointed as minister for external affairs in the provisional government in January 1922 but became disillusioned with the government and resigned on the outbreak of the Irish Civil War (1922-1923). Gavan Duffy later stood as an independent in the 1923 general election but failed to be re-elected. He returned to the Irish Bar and built his own practice and became the President of the High Court in 1946. Gavan Duffy died on June 1951, having suffered from lung cancer.
