Andrew Hyland was born in Dublin in 1869. He became manager of the Dublin Bookbinding and Machine Ruling Co., Ltd., and spent most of his working life there. The book 'Scotland' by William Beattie (MS 42,266) was bound by Hyland, circa 1891, as a specimen of his craft to qualify him as a bookbinder. In April 1916 he joined "A" Company 4th Battalion of the Irish Volunteers and was later transferred to the 4th Company, 5th Battalion (Engineers). In 1919 he was in charge of the Engineers' Training Camp at Rockbrook, and the first bridge built by the I.R.A. Engineers was erected on Colonel Guinness's estate under his direction. In September 1920 while on manoeuvres in Tibraddon in the Dublin mountains his company was ambushed by the Blacks and Tans and he was arrested and court-martialled by the British Military. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment which was later commuted to nine months. His prison sentence was served in Mountjoy Prison, Wormwood Scrubbs and Pentonville Gaols. He took part in the Civil War and was arrested in 1923 and interned in Mountjoy Prison and at the Curragh Camp. On his release he was ordered to re-organise the 5th Battalion, which he did. He remained an active member of the I.R.A. until 1931. He died in 1936.
