Letters from Éamonn Duggan to his fiancée May Kavanagh relating to Sinn Féin election campaigns,

1917-1918.

Duggan's letters to Kavanagh relate to his electioneering with Eamon de Valera during the Clare East by-election in 1917 and his own campaign to get elected in Meath South during the General Election campaign of 1918. He writes of the establishment of Sinn Féin clubs in Co. Meath, speaking at hustings and canvassing in Clare, Meath and Longford between 1917 and 1918, Sinn Fein's organisation at local level in Meath and the influence of local press and Catholic clergy in the campaigns. He also refers in passing to his state of mind on being released from prison in mid 1917.

Notes:Duggan joined the Irish Volunteers on their foundation in 1914 and fought at the North Dublin Union and later Fr. Mathew Hall during the Easter Rising. He was subsequently imprisoned in Mountjoy, Portland and Lewes prisons, was among those released in the summer of 1917 and successfully stood as a Sinn Féin candidate for South Meath in 1918.
