Description:Documents relating to the Michael Joseph O’Rahilly, 1913-1948, includes documents relating to the Irish Volunteers, such as a list of the first subscribers to the organisation and a first draft of the aims of the Volunteers,1913; Orders and receipt found on the body of O’Rahilly after he was killed during the rising, 1916 and a note from Eamonn De Valera to O’Rahilly’s son Aodogán, 1948.
Michael Joseph O’Rahilly was born on 22 April 1875 in Ballylongford, County Kerry. His two siblings Mary Ellen Humphreys and Anno O’Rahilly were both active in the Irish revolutionary period. He himself became a republican and joined the Gaelic League. He also spent time travelling in America and Europe before settling in Dublin in 1909. He was a founding member of the Irish Volunteers in 1913 and served as the Director of Arms. He directed the arming of the Irish Volunteers and the Howth gun-running on 26 July 1914. In April 1915 he published ‘history of the Irish Volunteers’. He was also one of the main people who trained and prepared the Volunteers for the 1916 Rising. He aligned with Eoin MacNeill and Bulmer Hobson who opposed a pre-emptive rising and after hearing of Hobson’s kidnap by the British forces of the German arms shipment for the volunteers, O’Rahilly played a role in persuading MacNeill to call off the Rising planned for Easter. However, he later joined the 1916 rebels on Easter Monday as he felt obligated to fight alongside the men he had recruited and trained. He fought at the General Post Office and on Thursday 27 April he was fatally wounded while charging a British barricade in Moore Street. He later died on Friday 28th April.
