Lehane notes that he heard from a man named "Harold C. Keyes" had visited him and wrties that he informed him that "James Larkin had framed up my arrest and that it was Larkin and the socialists who were stopping the bondsmen from bailing me". Keyes offered to provide bail for Lehane on the condition that on Lehane's release he stayed with "Dr. McCartan, the Sinn Feiner" and when Lehane refused, Keyes stopped visiting. Lehane notes that [Julius] Koettgen from the Freinds of German Democracy had been responsible for his arrest. He also fears that forged correspondence appears to "be the cause of much mischief as they may have damaged me in the eyes of my friends.".
