Muriel Gahan Papers,

1930-1994.

Papers of Muriel Gahan, reflecting her work as a promoter of traditional crafts in Ireland and role in the establishment of The Country Shop, Country Workers Ltd., the Irish Homespun Society and Country Markets Ltd. The collection also sheds light of her active involvement in further organisations such as the Royal Dublin Society, the Irish Countrywomen's Association, Foras Éireann, Macra na Tuaithe, the Crafts Council of Ireland and the credit union movement. Also included are papers of Blanaid O'Reilly, concerning the work of the Conor Magee Trust which provided financial support for weavers in the Donegal Gaeltacht and with whom Gahan collaborated as an I.H.S. member.

Included is an article by Sean Forde titled 'Memories are made of this' concerning the start of the credit union movement in Ireland and the personalities involved, a copy of Forde's speech 'As it was in the beginning', written to mark the Silver Jubliee of St. Michael's Credit Union, Seamus MacEoin's article 'The Credit Union and the Farmer' (offprint, published from 'Biatas', Vol. xvii, No. 11, Feb. 1964), and a typescript bulletin (No. 3), produced by the Credit Union Extension Service.
