Muriel Gahan Papers,

1930-1994.

Papers of Muriel Gahan, reflecting her work as a promoter of traditional crafts in Ireland and role in the establishment of The Country Shop, Country Workers Ltd., the Irish Homespun Society and Country Markets Ltd. The collection also sheds light of her active involvement in further organisations such as the Royal Dublin Society, the Irish Countrywomen's Association, Foras Éireann, Macra na Tuaithe, the Crafts Council of Ireland and the credit union movement. Also included are papers of Blanaid O'Reilly, concerning the work of the Conor Magee Trust which provided financial support for weavers in the Donegal Gaeltacht and with whom Gahan collaborated as an I.H.S. member.

Also included is an incomplete Irish Homespun Society memo, sent to the Department of Agriculture, titled 'Memoradum on Flax Growing'. With an attached, related letter from the I.H.S. secretary Mairin MacDonald, to the Department's assistant secretary; dated 8 March 1937. (4 pp)
Also included is an Irish Homespun Society document titled 'Scheme for the Employment of an Instructor in Weaving'. Attached is a typescript copy letter sent by the I.H.S. to J. Ingram of Talbot House, Dublin, concerning the training of instructors in homespun; letter dated 24 Mar. 1937. (8 pp)
