Letter from John Shiels to James Connolly explaining his absense from a meeting due to hospitalisation, and discussing the protest against Queen Victoria's diamond jubillee visit to Dublin,

1897 June 29.

Shiels expresses surprise that the "hearse" was not interfered with [the "hearse" refers to the black-draped coffin that was paraded through Dublin in protest against the jubillee visit]. Shiels remarks that, had the protest been halted, "You might then be classed with the Rutland martyrs, and it shows the keen cunning and diplomacy of the authorities."
