| Description: | Correspondence of Jerome Fahy, farmer and accountant at Clare County Council, with his family, friends, girlfriends and associates, largely relating to personal matters, mutual connections and scheduling social engagements. The authorship of many of Fahy's correspondents is frequently unclear. Included are some attached envelopes. Fahy's regular correspondence with 'Kit' is largely personal in nature; however, in a letter written from Grantham, Lincolnshire, dated 10 January 1918 (MS 49,802/9/37), she writes of her life in a garrison town and the social expectations placed on British army officers and their families. In a reply to her, dated 12 June 1918, Fahy makes a rare reference to the political situation in Ireland, notably Irish opposition to British Army conscription and his being one of the 'victims' of Sinn Fein 'in a small way. They ploughed up part of my land' (MS 49,802/9/51). |
