Annie O'Farrelly Papers,

1915-1980.

Papers largely relating to Annie O'Farrelly's involvement with the Irish Republican Army and Cumann na mBan, dating predominantly from the 1920s to the 1950s. The collection contains a large amount of O'Farrelly's correspondence and correspondents include Sighle Humphreys, Richard Mulcahy, Frank Ryan and Peadar O'Donnell. Also included are letters sent by O'Farrelly to her family while a prisoner during the Irish Civil War, 1922-1923, as well as her prison diary. The collection includes photographs pertaining to the Republican movement and commemorations in the 1930s alongside letters concerning Republican newspaper, 'An Phoblacht' and a large amount of I.R.A. communiqués and Cumann na mBan documents. There is a substantial amount of material, including biographical accounts and newspaper cuttings, concerning I.R.A. Chief of Staff, Seán Russell. Also included are minutes of meetings for the Irish language group, An Grágaire, of which O'Farrelly was a member.

Annie O’Farrelly was born in Dublin in 1901 and came from a Republican background. Her grandfather, Peter Boylan, was a Fenian and her family home was open to members of the IRA. O’Farrelly and her sisters were members of Cumann na mBan and collected on behalf of the Irish Republican Prisoners’ Dependents Fund in the War of Independence (1919-1921) and the Irish Civil War (1922-1923), she also worked in the office of the Adjutant General, IRA. O’Farrelly was a close friend of IRA Chief of Staff, Seán Russell, who died in 1940. After the outbreak of the Civil War in June 1922, Annie and her sister Rita were arrested and imprisoned in Mountjoy Prison, Kilmainham Jail and North Dublin Union. Following her release, she continued to be involved in the Republican movement and worked at the Republican newspaper ‘An Phoblacht’. She was a member of the Cumann na mBan executive and Clan na Gael in the 1930s. O’Farrelly was also a member of the Irish language group, An Grágaire.
