The collection contains the correspondence, literary and political papers of Thomas MacDonagh. Included are drafts of his poetry, plays, reviews and lectures and associated documentation relating to the journal the 'Irish Review', his notes and writings relating to the Irish Volunteers, applications for university teaching posts and some newscuttings. Also included are literary papers of his mother Mary-Louise MacDonagh (née Parker), of Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary.

Included are drafts of his poetry, plays, reviews and lectures and associated documentation relating to the journal the 'Irish Review', his notes and writings relating to the Irish Volunteers, applications for university teaching posts and some newscuttings. Also included are literary papers of his mother Mary-Louise MacDonagh (née Parker), of Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary. Thomas MacDonagh was born 1 February 1878 in Cloughjordan, County Tipperary. After abandoning his vocation for Priesthood he took on a career as a teacher and writer in 1901. He attended a meeting of the Gaelic League and became immersed in the league’s social and cultural activities and was elected to the Kilkenny branch executive committee. He became a fluent Irish speaker and writer and wrote two volumes of poetry in 1901 and 1903. In 1908 he became the resident assistant headmaster and instructor of language and literature in St Enda’s college in Ranelagh, the Irish language school newly opened by Patrick Pearse. In 1911 MacDonagh became co-founder of the ‘Irish Review’ a literary and topical monthly. In 1914 he managed the Irish Theatre in the Hardwicke Street Hall, Dublin. MacDonagh enrolled in the Volunteers in 1913 and was appointed to the armed body’s governing provisional committee. In 1915 he was also sworn into the secret Irish Republican Brotherhood and assumed a major role in the organization of the funeral of IRB veteran Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa. MacDonagh played an important role in the organisation of the 1916 rising as Dublin Brigade Commandant and was one of signatories of the Proclamation of the Republic. During the Rising MacDonagh’s battalion was stationed at the Jacob’s Biscuit Factory. Following the surrender MacDonagh was court martialled and executed by a firing squad on 3 May 1916 aged thirty-eight. |
