George Noble Plunkett was born on 3 December 1851 at 1 Aungier Street, Dublin. Plunkett was part of the prominent Irish Norman Plunkett family which included Saint Oliver Plunkett, his great-grandfather George Plunkett was the fifth cousin of the 8th Earl of Fingall. Plunkett enrolled at King’s Inns in 1870 and the Middle Temple in 1874 but was not called to the bar until 1886 and while there he befriended Oscar Wilde and Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa. Plunkett published a book of poems, wrote articles for magazines and edited ‘Hibernia’. In 1883 he donated funds to the nursing order of the Little Company of Mary (Blue Sisters) and on 4 April 1884 Pope Leo XIII made him a count. In the 1892 general election he was the Parnellite candidate for Mid-Tyrone and he was the sole nationalist candidate for Dublin in the 1895 general election. In April 1916 Plunkett was sworn into the IRB by his son Joseph Plunkett, sending him secretly to seek Germain aid and a papal blessing for the Easter Rising. On 3 February 1917, running as an independent candidate, Plunkett won the seat of Roscommon North in a by-election but he abstained from Westminster and he initiated a Republican Liberty League which affiliated with groups such as Sinn Féin. He presided as Sinn Féin’s oldest MP at the planning meeting for Dáil Éireann on 17 January 1919 and at its opening session on 21 January. He was made foreign affairs minister by Cathal Brugha. Following the Irish War of Independence, Count Plunkett joined the anti-treaty side and continued to support Sinn Féin after the split with Fianna Fáil. He lost his Dáil seat at the 1927 general election. A year later he published his last poetry collection, ‘Eros’. On 8 December 1938 he transferred republican sovereignty to the IRA army council He died on 12 March 1948 and was buried in Glasnevin cemetery.
