Description:Includes correspondence between John Francis Swaine and L. A. G. Strong, manuscripts of short stories, and related newspaper cuttings. Correspondence concerns mostly literary topics and sometimes payment of royalties.
John Francis Swaine (1880-1954) worked in the Dublin and South Eastern Railway from 1900, retiring as traffic manager in the 1940s. In the 1920s, he met the writer L.A.G. Strong (1896-1958). Recognising Swaine's literary abilities, Strong made an arrangement with him, whereby about five full-length novels and several hundred short stories, which were written by Swaine, were published under the name of Strong, who paid him a percentage of the royalties. The stories were mainly based on the doings and musings of an Irish sage called 'Mr Mangan' (a fictional version of Swaine himself), and appeared in the London Evening News, Blackwood's Magazine and the Strand Magazine, as well as being published in book form. The Estate of L.A.G.Strong has acknowledged John Francis Swaine's authorship of this material. This collection includes the originals of many of these stories, related newspaper cuttings and Swaine's correspondence with Strong, which concerns literary topics and royalty payments.
