Notes:The Cole Bowen Papers consist of deeds, legal papers, correspondence, maps and surveys, receipts and rentals relating to the Bowen estate in the area of Fermoy Co. Cork, and their lands in Galway, Tipperary, Meath, and Dublin, and Glanmorgan, Wales. The collection also includes papers relating to tenants on the Wandesforde estate at Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny and the Ffrench family of Monivea, Co. Galway.

Some of the more significant papers within this collection relate to the granting of lands to those who served in the English army during the Cromwellian campaign with reference to the Down survey as the means of valuation. There are also deeds and legal papers relating to soldiers selling on their granted lands to the Cole Bowen family and others.

The Bowen family were originally from Glanmorgan in Wales. In return for his service in the English army during the Cromwellian campaign, Colonel Henry Bowen was granted land in and around Farrihy, Fermoy, Co. Cork. Marriages into the Cole and Nicholls families extended the estate to include lands in Tipperary, Limerick, Meath, Galway, and Dublin. The family home of Bowenscourt was built in 1776, and served as the centre of the Bowen estate until it was sold in 1951 by Elizabeth Bowen (writer) and later demolished in 1961.

Some of the earlier papers from the Cole Bowen collection were consulted by Edward MacLysaght while still in posession of the Bowen family at Bowenscourt. MacLysaght detailed some of the papers in Analecta Hibernica 15 1944.
