[graphic] /

Cartoon showing the Bishop of Limerick in full regalia using his sceptre to defend the “English Education Bill” from David Lloyd George. In his hand Lloyd George hold a bat with “Irish Party” engraved on it; in his pocket a leaflet with “Congratulations from the Archbishop of Westminster” written on it; and a “Louth” bandage upon his head. Above the bishop float the phrases “Irreligious blackguards”, “political brokers”, “Irish Clemenceau” and “ratting”. In the background a Christian Brothers school can be seen. Beneath the image is a quote extracted from the Bishop of Limerick’s letter to the Freeman’s Journal of 15 December 1906, claiming that the Irish Party “represent on opinion – Catholic or Irish – but are the puppets of the English liberals in this matter”.
