Udolphus Wright Papers,

1894-1975.

The collection contains documentation (a cashbook, programme, souvenir booklets, newscuttings and a scrapbook) concerning successive Abbey Theatre tours in the United States between 1911 and 1938. Also included are letters to Wright from amongst others Lady Gregory (1912 to 1931), and from W. B. Yeats (1912 to 1916) which primarily relate to the Abbey Theatre. Additional fragmentary newscuttings relate to Wright's family and include press notices following his death in 1952.

Notes:Udolphus (Dossie) Wright was an electrician by profession. He initially joined the Irish National Theatre Society in 1903, having been introduced to it by actor W. G. Fay. He was involved in the Abbey Theatre from its foundation, and worked there for the remainder of his career as a small-part actor, stage manager, manager, but principally as the Theatre's house electrician. He died in 1952.

Description:Typescript letter with manuscript inclusions in which Gregory writes of the arrest of the Abbey Theatre actors in Philadelphia, and their plan to 'sue the Publican McGarrity for Malicious arrest'. The Mr. Quinn she refers to is the New York lawyer John Quinn, who bailed out all the cast.
