Notebook contains a manuscript draft of Caroline Hamilton's history of the Hamilton family which she published in 1851 under the title 'A Short History of the Hamilton's of Hamwood, and their Antecedents'. The history is addressed to her eldest child Charles William Hamilton. She continued writing in the notebook following its publication and included her recollections of her late husband Charles Hamilton (d. 1857) and a faircopy transcription of her an untitled poem on widowhood, which she wrote in February 1859. A second manuscript copy of the poem is listed as MS 49,155/3/3.
